Rihanna visited Westfield London to launch her new album and turn on the Christmas lights. Following last year’s successful event, Flare was invited back to provide design, kit and crew for the launch.
With thousands attending and comprehensive media coverage, the event was a huge success.
In July 2010 Skyfest came to West London. Featuring headliners “Scouting for Girls”, this festival continued on the success of the June Skyfest in Edinburgh. Flare provided lighting and video design for the main stage over the two-day event.
Flare Lighting provided the lighting and set design for the annual Hurtwood Concert. Hurtwood House is one of the top performing arts colleges in the country and is well known for producing shows to a very high standard. The Hurtwood Concert featured a professional band and over 30 musical and dance numbers.
The challenge for Flare was to produce a design that was both flexible and practical while keeping the interest for each of the different musical styles. The set consisted of Martin LC Panels and Illeum Fusion Battens to provide a video backdrop. Other fixtures included Martin Mac 700′s, 600′s and 300′s provided by White Light. Richard Martin Lighting provided the LC Panels as well as GLP impressions and Novalight Novaflowers.
At the end of last year Flare Lighting provided the lighting design and realisation for the ‘Mariah Carey Switch On’ event at Westfield London.
The brief was to provide a two stage ‘glitz and glamour’ lighting solutions. The first stage was to create a spectacular entrance for Mariah on the external promenade of Westfield. The second to provide lighting design for the main stage where Mariah would present from.
The promenade lighting incorporated a number of different elements. Star Flowers, VL300 spots, VL2500 washes and Colour punches were just some of the fixtures used. Along with the effect lighting there need to be enough face light as she would be on camera at all times. This was achieved by a two high powered Robert Juliat followspots with strategic placement.
In between the two areas we had tungsten Sun Guns and ‘bashers’ to help the cameras with the otherwise very flat light from the shopping centre.
The stage area needed to have enough punch to get through the high ambient light levels in the centre. The Alpha Beam 1500 was perfect for the job. This was complimented with some floor mounted JB Lighting A7 LED heads. Flare utilised the in house fixtures of VL3000s and Mac 700s to light the Grotto and to augment the effect lighting on the stage.
The event was a huge success and created a massive buzz around the area and indeed the celebrity news.
The equipment for this job was provided by White Light. Photographs kindly provided by Toby Merritt: www.tobymerritt.co.uk
